Is there any Hope?

Author's Note: This a poem about a book that I have just finished reading. It's called Life as we Knew It, and it's by Susan Pfeffer. It is definitly a sci-fi genre and if you like those kinds of books you'll probably enjoy this one. Here I have written a poem about this book.(It's also on my poetry blog:)

I remember the day...
when the moon got bigger,
and we scrambled for food.
Is there any hope we won't starve?

The day when the well went dry
Is there any hope that we won't die of thirst?

When my friend and neighbor died.
Is there any hope that we'll live?

Winter came as harsh and cruel as ever.
Is there any hope that we won't freeze to death.

Then my family got sick.
Is there any hope they'll survive?

Then the mayor came with bags of food.
We will not starve.

We were surronded by snow.
We will not die of thirst.

We saw people.
We are not alone.

We have wood and a fireplace.
We will not freeze.

Is there any hope in this cruel world?
Yes, there always is.

  1. I love what you are trying to do here with poetry. Responding to literature in some unconventional ways can be fun, but also hard as soon as apply standards to your work. Be sure you are forming concrete goals to your writing regardless the form; what are the poetry goals for yourself?

  2. I liked that poem. The way you used repetition made it interesting to read, and I liked how you ended it.

  3. I can easily see the transition from ironic to romantic, or, as you would say, hope.
