Neighborhood

Author's Note: This is a stream of consciousness we did in class one day. I had to think back to when I lived in a neighborhood with more kids in it. Right now I live in an apartment complex so that didn't really help me get my concrete image.

I open a window and the sounds and smells rush in. The laughter of the children playing outside, the crackling of leaves as they jump into the giant piles on the side of the road. The talking about Halloween and what they will be. Shrieking and crying when someone is hurt. Parents rushing out the door to see what has happened to their child.  The fresh autumn breeze carrying the scent of leaves, trees, and the beach down the road. The smell of carved pumpkins on the front porch. The twinkling lights hanging from the windows. Ghosts, Jack 'o' Lanterns, Skeletons, and spiders decorating the yard with lights and color. Children listen to music and dance and sing. Birds singing to each other way up in the trees.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this piece and really like that before we read your piece, we come across the author's note. I should do that too. I like doing stream of consciousness also. It empties your mind full of thoughts. Great!
